[D2 Early September Morning] I could do this with my wand in my bag

by Grace Wilkinson
Grace sighed, her mind wondering away from the class. It was a tough morning, the weather was cold, and the class was pretty mixed so far. Who knew casting Wingardium Leviosa without a wand was so tough? Still, it was something she was really invested in doing currently, due to Circumstances, and she once again tried to levitate the china set without breaking it.
"At least we are not casting Accio yet..."

The classroom continued on with Professor Bulstrode still talking on about the subject at hand. "The important thing to remember about wandless magic is concentration. This is like stretching a muscle you never knew you had." Pius begins to wave his hands around. "Some of you may be more used to having to rely on it as a crutch, and that is fine; it is a fine tool to have."
His eyes glance over to the British wizards of the class. "Start by picturing in your head a wand. Imagine your wand, you are holding with a hand in your head. Imagine it, keep that thought there...do the motions of the spell in your head and say the words."
He looks on at his goblet and give it a strong look. "Wingardium Leviosa." The goblet begins to rise up and slowly levitate into his hand before he grabs a drink of water. "Now, everyone try it."

Wandless Magic Practice
Start with the Basics
Wandless Magic is a bit of a artform for any student with the mind to attempt it. For now, Bulstrode wishes his fifth year students to attempt it with a basic spell every first year is taught: the Levitation Charm on a simple feather. It is exactly as you would remember it being as 4 years ago, only without the wand. Should be easy, right?
Choose Only One:
Keeping it Safe
Roll a Charms check with the proper Wandless Magic penalties at a base easy difficulty. Any talents that would help in this may apply to reduce the penalties. A success means you get a A for the class day. You may attempt this check three times with a cumulative setback dice at every attempt, due to getting frustrated with your failure. Advantages and Disadvantages grant bonus die or setback die to the roll at a 2:1 ratio.
Nobody Likes a Showoff
If you really want to impress Professor Bulstrode, you may attempt to go big. Pick something that would be in the classroom (a book, a globe, a willing student, etc) and cast a charm spell on it/them at a average difficulty, with all the penalties that would apply with doing a wandless magic roll. On a success, you manage to lift them up off the ground and maintain the focus on concentration. This will net you a O for the class day and 10 House points for the day. On a failure, you end up breaking whatever it was you lifted up, upsetting your teacher, and will end up losing 10 House Points for trying to be a showoff. You may only attempt this once.
No matter what you choose, Triumphs and Despairs rolled for this will count as 2 successes or failures for the purposes of the tally.

Grace gritted her teeth and instinctively drew her wand...before realizing, no this was not that class. She put it back. She pointed her manicured nail at her owl feather, and in a strong, decisive tone, commanded it to be fly! Be free!
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
The feather wavered, but did not float. She gritted her teeth, closed her eyes for a moment to focus her energies, snapped them open and repeated.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" This time the feather flew up wildly, before settling into a pattern.

Oh great...no wands.
Fitz tucks his wand away. Without it, he feels a conspicuous absence, like that of an old friend.
He can see Wilkinson struggling with it, and then managing it gradually.
Come on Fitz, you can do this!
Of course, that was easier said that done. Fitz shuts his eyes, trying desperately to feel...something, anything, and yet without the wand, the magic that would have come easy to him seems to very distant. With a sigh, he opens his eyes and looks over his classmates...and yet, as he notices the other Thunderbird in the room, a small smile creeps over his face.
They would be annoyed if I wussed out and played it safe. Come on, you want to show everyone, and you're worried?
There was magic in the world. Magic that didn't shrivel up because you didn't have a wand by it. Especially not the Magnum Opus he had been chasing.
"Refine your soul. The first step is Calcination. To drive off the impurites with pressure and flame"
Fitz's eyes sharpen, his soul lifting. He tries to pull from...somewhere, setting his sights on a marble bust.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
Charms-Average-Wandless Magic Upgrades-Story Point spent to activate "I Know This!":
4eP+2eC+2eD 3 failures, 1 advantage

Fitz felt...
something, but failed to move the bust.

The bust first appeared to be still, but then, thru a unexpected force, it finally begins to float up!
Float up at speed of about 20 miles per hour.
The bust slams into the ceiling before coming down on the ground just as quickly.
A quick look over at the culprit from Pius and his eyes meet a glare.
"10 points off of Thunderbird for incompetence. The
feather is what you lift, Mister Crowninsheild! Not my bust!"
"A additional 5 points off for language. I know what that No-Maj talk means, sir. Hold your tongue."

Sylvain glared at the teacher for a hot second, clearly a stuck up of some kind, before getting his attention somewhere else.
This colonial magic was not what he wanted to master anyway.

Fitz desperately tries to not giggle at the "lifting bust" part, and in spite of a noble effort is unable to keep a smile off his face, so talking is the only option.
"I apologize professor, I would never damage damage it intentionally. I know it's delicate and should have been handled gently. Again, my apologies."

Wandless magic. Even though he knew it was an ancient tradition, the idea bothered Arly. His family makes and sells wands. Wands were important. Wands should always be used.
But, here he was. Wandless magic class. He had to do it and, as usual, he would give it his all. Glancing over at Syl, he gestured in his direction.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
To Arlington's surprise, his friend began to rise.
"Sorry, Syl! I should have asked..."

Pius glanced on at the two of his students proving his themselves. Firstly, to his student in his house.

Joseph tries his best to follow the teacher's advice. Be careful. Think, then visualize. Slowly, the mind wanders however and in the end Joseph had raised himself off the ground without realizing it.
"Ack." He jerks slowly in the air before regaining control and drifts down with more grace.
"Nice work, Joseph. You have a good strong grip on yourself, but you are wavering. Though it is a bit of a risk for yourself, so try to keep it to the feather next time. 10 Points for Horned Serpent, all the same."

His eyes then turn to Arlington, a look of surprise on his face for a moment as he stared at the sight of the student who gave him the stink eye floating in the sky beyond his control.
"Mister Wayne, you...please put down Mister Leloup. It looks as if he is not enjoying the experience. 10 points for Thunderbird, for making one fly, I suppose. Nice work." He turned to face the board, a slight moment as he did so would show a small smirk on his face from it.

So, wandless magic. Piece of cake? It must be...most people were doing it. Seems it was expected of Layla to do it as well, so she gave it a try. The feather however seemed....simple enough. She wasn't really concentrating on it however, as the vase just beyond it was more in her view.
What ended up happening was instead of the feather floating away, the vase somewhat...lifted then fell over the side, shattering.
"...Oops."
Didn't mean to do that! She peered in the direction of the teacher, hoping he was too focused at shouting at others to notice her error. It was unlikely.
D2 wandless magic. Lifting a vase! Average difficulty charm spell+wandless penalties:
3eA+2eD+2eC 1 failure, 1 Despair

Rubbing his temples, the professor makes a B-Line directly to the shattered vase before making his way over to the miss who cast it. "For the last time, people...it's the
feather you are to lift, not the students or my personal affects. 10 points off of Horned Serpent for not clearly listening." He walked away to go start and began to demonstrate to the class his skills.
"Reparo!" Waving his hands, he focused on the bust that had been broken and the vase. Quickly the two objects slowly began to reform themselves on the ground as he concentrated, his mind focused on the task and without his wand no less.

Damnit.
"I'm sorry" Layla said quietly, backing away from the angry teacher. She kinda wished she had a large student to hide behind at this point.

''Heh, it's not too bad Miss Smith.'' Sylvain said floating lower as Arlington lowered him down ''Breaking a vase is only to swears worth of reprimand''

"It wasn't intentional, the vase...distracted me" Layla said, her voice getting lower as even she realised how silly what she said sounded. Her face going slightly red.

''Heh'' he finally reached the ground with a small shiver of unease about the whole airbone experience ''That happens, don't fret about it too much''
He tried to be reassuring, tried.

"Sure" Layla said, looking around, hoping for something to distract everyone from looking at her. She felt like all eyes on her and it was making her more uncomfortable.
"Maybe...um...trying again?"

"What happened?" Layla peeked up at Arlington. She remembered him from the diner back when she first arrived.
